The Safety Advisor provides specialist technical and practical advice and solutions regarding all aspects of the occupational safety and industrial hygiene safety and health program at Methanex Medicine Hat. The position is responsible for assessing and ensuring compliance of the Methanex Medicine Hat site with federal, provincial, and municipal Occupational Health and Safety legislation, Methanex Corporation, and Industry standards in order to promote the well-being of employees in the workplace, avoid exposure to risk, and to reduce costs related to workplace injuries and/or non-compliance fines and penalties.
This is a temporary position with an anticipated end date of August 31, 2025.
Position Responsibilities
Identify and stop dangerous work promptly, and coach workers to understand and commit to safe work.
Build strong relationships with workers, be the go-to person for safety advice, avoid and break down the policing mentality.
Provide recognition where the Methanex One Team, Core Values and Responsible Care Behaviour Standard are displayed, and conduct courageous conversations where it is not followed.
Provide practical advice, coaching and guidance to workers (employees and contractors) on a broad range of safety issues and decisions, in order to drive and improve the site safety culture and to ensure compliance with requirements.
Actively promote and reinforce compliance with OHS and Responsible Care policies, procedures, and applicable standards.
Improve employee and contractors’ safety knowledge by leading safety briefings, toolbox sessions, safety meetings and training.
Provide expert technical advice to management to support decision and policy making.
Liaise and coordinate with contractor safety supervisors regarding safety, industrial hygiene, and RC requirements.
Collects and assesses data to identify trends and evaluate the effectiveness of safety programs.
Review contractor performance to ensure they meet the requirements of the safety and industrial hygiene programs as part of the overall integrated Responsible Care (RC) management system.
Identify, develop, lead, and support the implementation of safety and industrial hygiene programs, systems, and processes as part of the overall integrated Responsible Care (RC) management system, such as
– Site safe work practices and procedures
– Occupational health and safety training
– Industrial Hygiene monitoring
– Respiratory Program
– Asbestos Program
– Noise and Hearing Conservation Program
Collect and assess data related to safety and industrial hygiene programs to evaluate the effectiveness of the programs, identify trends and improvement opportunities.
Develop, document, implement and maintain the site safe work practices that meet federal, provincial, and municipal occupational health and safety legislation, Methanex and industry standards.
Identify emerging health, safety, and industrial hygiene issues (e.g., fall protection, gas monitoring), develop and implement appropriate systems and processes.
Establish a visible presence in the field to promote Responsible Care. Demonstrate commitment to Health and Safety by and making safety part of your daily conversations with workers and taking note of health and safety suggestions or concerns. Be a role model for safety expectations.
Review the site’s safe work practices to ensure they meet regulatory and corporate requirements and industry best practices.
Assess and evaluate work procedures and environments to identify potential hazards and eliminate them or ensure adequate controls are in place.
Plan, schedule and coordinate third-party certified industrial hygiene consultants to complete industrial hygiene monitoring.
Support the review and issuance of WSCS permits and certificates as required, including
– CSE planning and certificates
– Restricted space documentation
– Fire impairments
Advise on the implementation of the site risk management procedures as they relate to the different departments (Technical, Maintenance, Operations)
Lead or participate in work-specific risk assessments to identify hazards and controls.
Identify, support and drive implementation of controls to reduce risk.
Participate in process hazard analysis related to existing site processes, process changes and new construction projects.
Attend work order and Management of Change projects kick-off, check prints, process hazard assessments, risk assessments, and acceptance meetings to identify, specify and ensure that Responsible Care requirements are identified and implemented.
Participate in turnaround work planning (maintenance and project activities) with the purpose of identification of risks and opportunities.
Develop and/or provide inputs related to safety and industrial hygiene to the RC Plan, Safe Work Practices and processes for various work tasks being carried out.
Supports safety planning for facility-planned and emergency outages.
Identify, develop, lead, and support the implementation of turnaround-specific programs, based on identified hazards, near-misses, and incidents, such as Stop the Drop.
Attend progress update meetings and provide feedback/mitigation for health, safety, and industrial hygiene issues.
Monitor implementation of RC requirements throughout the execution of projects, maintenance, and turnaround work activities
Support Methanex employees to report hazards, near-misses, and incidents to the event management system (KMI by VelocityEHS).
Complete weekly reviews of all incidents and review content for classification, severity, root cause(s), action items, and completion status.
Review reported hazards, near-misses, incidents, injuries, and illnesses on a regular basis, and advise on corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Conduct and support incident or near-miss investigations, using TapRoot®, Appollo®, HFAT® or other root cause analysis methodology.
Develop or support the development of lessons learned from incident investigations.
Review and arrange for site review of internal and external Lessons Learned (L2) documents to identify corrective actions appropriate for the site.
Develop and facilitate health and safety-related training courses (including new employee and contractor safety orientations) as appropriate.
Develop and facilitate site orientation process for Methanex employees and contractors.
Represent Medicine Hat and Responsible Care on identified committees and teams, including
– Global Occupational Safety Excellence Team (GOSET).
– Site Health and Safety Committee
– Work Safety Control System Team
– Electrical Safety Steering Committee
Conduct field audits to confirm compliance with site health, safety and industrial hygiene requirements, standards, and processes.
Conduct WSCS process area safety and housekeeping audits.

Position Qualifications
Post-secondary Diploma and/or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
ACSA National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) Certificate
Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (CRSP) accreditation or the ability to pursue.
Accredited auditor training

Experience & Skills
Five years related Health and Safety experience in the oil and gas and/or petrochemical industry.
Demonstrated awareness of current and emerging occupational health issues.
Experience conducting workplace program audits to minimize or alleviate unsafe work conditions and prevent workplace accidents.
Problem-solving and providing recommendations related to workplace practices/conditions and accident investigations.
Compiling and tracking of statistics and data to facilitate the prioritization of mitigation strategies.
Interpreting applicable codes, standards, guidelines, and relevant legislation.
Providing advice and guidance to managers/supervisors to ensure legislative compliance.
Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning techniques and principles, including demonstrated experience developing and delivering effective health and safety training and workshop programs.
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of programs, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, as well as web-based applications.
