Stony Brook Medicine is seeking an experienced Senior Network Engineer to join our Network Services division. Stony Brook Medicine comprises four hospitals and spans over 100 clinical and non-clinical sites across Long Island, utilizing cutting-edge network infrastructure technology as it continues to grow. The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing maintaining, and resolving issues related to all pertinent networking technology functions within the healthcare system. The Senior Network Engineer will engage with contemporary technologies, including LAN/WAN, SD-WAN, EVPN/VXLAN, WiFi, VoIP, and the underlying networking cabling/protocols that underpin modern data/VoIP systems. The Senior Network Engineer will offer technical supervision and direction to Network Engineers throughout the entire lifecycle of network components—from analysis and design to engineering, testing, documentation, implementation, maintenance, and operation. This role extends its design and support services to various IT departments and business clients. Duties of a Senior Network Engineer may include the following but are not limited to: Design, deploy, and maintain all networking technology within the healthcare system.
Execute lifecycle upgrades of network infrastructure, encompassing firmware and hardware replacements.
Lead network infrastructure projects, managing documentation, teams, schedules, and communication with senior administrators and customers.
Collaborate as a team member on diverse network infrastructure projects, potentially involving ff-hours implementations, and maintain effective communication with both senior administrators and team members.
Investigate, report, and troubleshoot network performance issues and unplanned outages, collaborating with departmental data systems, administrators, and network management tools for resolution.
Research and provide recommendations for network infrastructure designs, considering factors like performance, workflow, utilization, and reliability.• Deliver Level 2 and Level 3 network infrastructure support to healthcare system customers and engineers.
Undertake project-related tasks, designs, and troubleshooting that may require travel to/from healthcare system sites.
Analyze statistical data from the Network Management Systems (NMS) for capacity planning, reporting, and proposing network upgrades for budget planning.
Evaluate departmental and customer project requirements, devising suitable network solutions.
Document and diagram projects, systems, and infrastructures regularly and in a timely manner.
Coordinate and supervise vendor installations and maintenance activities.
Stay updated on information technology trends and best practices.
Share information and cross-train with I/S colleagues, leveraging technical knowledge of operating systems, computers, and networks in all aspects of work.
Provide support to business customers and I/S colleagues as needed for mutual success.
Review, analyze, and suggest cost-saving recommendations for all networking technologies.
Participate in paid on-call/after-hours support rotation with an onsite recall for emergency response.
Bachelor’s Degree AND a minimum of six (6) years' experience with network infrastructure devices/systems in a medium/large enterprise (over 1,000 computers) OR Associates Degree and a minimum of ten (10) years of related experience in a medium/large enterprise (over 1,000 computers).
In-depth, hands-on knowledge of routing and switch protocols, including (EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, STP, LLDP, IGMP, QOS, ARP, etc.).
Working knowledge of DHCP, DNS, RADIUS, TACACS in an enterprise environment.
Working experience in design and implementation of SD-WAN technology.
Working knowledge of Microsoft AD and domains in an enterprise environment.
Familiarity with Virtual Machine environments (VMWare, Hyper-V, etc.).
Understanding of network protocols such as (FTP, SFTP, SSL, etc.).
Proficiency in troubleshooting with Wireshark, including protocol decoding and filters.
Ability to travel to remote sites and work independently.
Availability to participate in on-call/after-hours support rotation.
Exceptional communication skills for effective information exchange with fellow engineers, staff, and customers.
Capability to work collaboratively with a team and customers while also demonstrating independent work skills.
Physical ability to remain stationary for significant portions of the day, lift up to 50 lbs., bend, kneel, and stand to perform job duties.
Preferred:
Experience in network infrastructure within a healthcare organization with a scale of over 1,000 computers.
Proficiency in WAN technologies, encompassing metro-Ethernet, DIA, dark fiber, cable modem, and associated protocols.
Familiarity with Cisco L2/L3 product line, including Nexus and Catalyst (IOS/XE/NS-OS).
Experience with Palo Alto/CloudGenix SD-WAN solution.
Experience with VXLAN/EVPN technologies in datacenter deployments.
Working knowledge of VoIP functions, infrastructure, and protocols.
Hands-on experience with HPe/Aruba wireless APs and controllers.
Proficiency in using SolarWinds NMS (Network Management) tools for event and performance monitoring.
Additional years of experience beyond the minimum requirements.
Experience with Python/JSON/Postman.
