Description:

Computational Social Science is an interdisciplinary team conducting applied research to understand and improve the value of Meta’s products for people and society. We are social scientists dedicated to advancing Meta's work on societal topics like healthy connection and community, healthy civic discourse, economic opportunity, and equity, at scale using quantitative and computational methods.

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Social Capital Research initiative on the Computational Social Science team, which aims to advance public knowledge about how social connections provide benefits including economic opportunity & mobility, educational attainment, and community resilience.

The ideal candidate will have extensive graduate training in computational approaches to the social sciences, and an interest in answering challenging, open-ended research questions with real-world impact.

Design and execute research that uses cutting-edge computational and quantitative methods to advance the scientific understanding of the value of social connections.
Work with large amounts of data in service of concrete conclusions and actionable insights.
Communicate complex technical topics and nuanced insights to diverse audiences.
Learn new tools and languages quickly as required by the project you are working on, with tasks ranging across data processing, production engineering, modeling, machine learning, data analysis, and experimentation.
Work both independently and collaboratively with other scientists, engineers, designers, UX researchers, and product managers to accomplish complex tasks that deliver demonstrable value to Meta’s community of over 3 billion people.
Think creatively, proactively, and futuristically to identify new opportunities within Meta’s long-term roadmap for data-scientific contributions.
Minimum Qualifications
Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD, in Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Statistics or a related field.
Experience with statistical methods and computational approaches (e.g. machine learning, social network analysis, causal inference), and solving analytical problems using such techniques.
Expertise in empirical research, including manipulating and analyzing complex data and communicating precise insights from quantitative analyses.
Experience with data analysis languages such as R or Python.
Experience using relational databases and SQL.
Experience with statistical inference techniques.
Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Preferred Qualifications
Proficiency with common machine learning algorithms and experience with training models with large-scale data.
Demonstrated software engineer experience via an internship, work experience, coding competitions, or widely used contributions in open source repositories (e.g. GitHub).
Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.
Proven track record of scientific achievement as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, or publications at leading journals (e.g. PNAS) or social science conferences (e.g. IC2S2, WWW, EC).
Experience working in an industry applied research environment.
